Teagasc Let’s Talk Equine webinars return on Feb 1st with the first panellist of the year Emma McCabe of Epic Management, a marketing management agency with an equine focus. Wendy Conlon, Teagasc Equine Specialist, will discuss the topic of optimising online marketing with Emma. As usual live attendees can submit their own questions on the night. The webinar airs at 8.30pm on Tuesday Feb 1st. Register at www.teagasc.ie/letstalkequine This month’s TRY Horticulture virtual event will focus on the level 7 BSc in Horticulture which is run jointly between the Teagasc college of Amenity Horticulture and Waterford institute of Technology(WIT). The level 7 course is a three year degree course which combines the earth sciences with practical and commercial horticulture along with the business of horticulture. It covers 6 semesters across the three years which also includes work experience that may be done here in Ireland or abroad. If you are looking for a vibrant qualification that encompasses working in the wide outdoors with the expertise of science and business management then this is the perfect place to start. We cover science based subjects like plant science, soil science and land chemistry in year 1 . In year 2 you can choose to diversify into major elective areas like landscaping, nursery stock production, turf grass or food production while in year 3 you get to look at modules in business like marketing and people management.

The Students are as follows, from Level 5 Certificate in Horticulture Kenneth Casey, level 6 Advanced cert in Horticulture Peter Kelleher and Level 7 Degree student Holly Mc Quillan. All were present along with College Principal John Mulhern and Assistant Principal Deirdre Walsh to talk about their experiences in the courses and how they are realising their goals in Horticulture. The event showcases the location in Botanics Glasnevin and in Teagasc Ashtown and the excellent resources in each. At the event on the 11th March at 12.30pm there will be a live panel discussion with college staff and students on the programmes that are offered in horticulture at the college. Full time students from the Level 5 Certificate in Horticulture, Level 6 advanced Certificate in Horticulture and the Level 7 degree programme will be present to offer their thoughts on their college programmes. There will be short presentations on the courses offered and participants will get a chance to ask questions to the panel directly. This is a great opportunity to tune into this unique lunchtime talk where there will be active debate that might well shape your application to the horticulture courses this year. Horticulture – Online Careers EventOur Autumn event on the 14th October between 4-5 pm. We will do a virtual live zoom event where there will be presentations on the courses and the enterprises in the college (Landscaping , Food , Nursery and Sportsturf ) for about 20 mins. Then we will do live Q and A chat through Zoom for the next 20-25 mins and then wrap up. Teagasc is set to run a number of open days at its Agricultural Colleges across the country for prospective students in the coming days and weeks.Schools, students, teachers and parents are all invited to attend any of the upcoming open days, Head of Education at Teagasc, Tony Petit, said. These events provide a unique opportunity to update visitors on career opportunities, as well as Teagasc course offerings, in the land-based sector, he added. At these open days, visitors will receive information on all further and higher level courses in agriculture, horticulture, equine studies and forestry. They will also receive an outline of careers in agriculture, agri-business, amenity and production horticulture, forestry, horse-breeding and training, according to Teagasc.
