Seize the opportunity to experience University life with UCD’s Agriculture, Food & Nutrition Summer School 2016. Agriculture, Food & Nutrition encompass food production, business, human nutrition, environmental protection and animal welfare – and how they interact with one another. The Agriculture, Food & Nutrition Summer School is a one-day event which is taking place on Thursday 9th June and is intended for fifth year students (or Year 12 A-Level students) as a taster for university life, with particular emphasis on programme areas of their interest. If you, or someone you know, would like to gain an insight into studying on one of the Bachelor of Agricultural Science course options or on the Bachelor of Science in Food Science or Human Nutrition courses, that is exactly what will be achieved by participating in our one day UCD Agriculture, Food & Nutrition Summer School. For more info and to sign up, visit www.ucdsummerschool.ie The Naughton Scholarships are a scheme of scholarships to promote the study of engineering, science and technology at third level by students in Ireland. Each year from February to May Leaving Certificate students can apply for a scholarship if they intend on studying science, engineering or technology at third level that year.
We are particularly interested in students applying to study STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics) related subjects rather then the more practical sciences (Medicine, Nursing, Veterinary, Physiotherapy etc). All applications are reviewed in August each year and the winners of scholarships are notified in September. Full details on who is eligible to apply for a scholarship, the terms and conditions applicable to the scholarships and answers to frequent questions are contained in the three sections below. DCU Access entry route is a support scheme for school leavers from socio-economically disadvantaged backgrounds applying for courses in DCU (incorporating St. Patrick's College, Drumcondra and Mater Dei Institute of Education). Eligible students compete for a quota of reduced points places in DCU. Students who get a university place through DCU Access also get a range of personal, academic and social supports. The Construction Industry Federation have just launched a new website promoting opportunities in the construction industry for apprenticeships –www.apprentices.ie. The website gives information about what an apprenticeship in the industry involves but also uniquely it allows young people who are interested in seeking an apprenticeship , to create a personal profile that can be viewed by employers seeking to employ an apprentice. Also, for the first time, vacancies will be advertised on the site and there are presently a number of well established companies offering positions leading to successful careers in the sector. The HGV Driver Apprenticeship programme, commencing in September, will be run on a pilot basis in conjunction with the Cavan-Monaghan Education Training Board (ETB), with a view to a nationwide roll-out if the pilot proves successful. In response to demands from companies in the ICT sector and increasing interest in technology programmes amongst school leavers and mature students, the Institute of Technology Blanchardstown’s (ITB) Department of Informatics is today launching a new programme in Networking Technologies – ‘Higher Certificate in Science in Computing’. The Higher Certificate in Science in Computing is a new innovative third level programme that has been designed with industry as it combines in-company placement with up to date technical skills that are currently very much in demand. Course Delivery : The Programme will take place over a two year period with over 50% of the student’s time being spent applying their knowledge whilst learning new applied skills in the workplace through a work placement. Each student will spend four months studying in ITB at the beginning of Year One and Year Two learning the theory and skills required in the workplace. During the following eight months each year, students will then spend 80% of their time applying these skills and knowledge within the work environment.
