completion rates at higher education for 2007 entrants

14/2/2019

The findings show that, on average, 82% of Level 8 entrants completed their studies, more specifically 94% for college, 83% for university and 74% for institute of technology entrants. Across all levels and sectors, 76% of 2007/08 full-time new entrants completed their higher education programme within the institution they started in.
Completion rates are somewhat lower among Level 6/7 entrants in the institutes of technology, at 62%, which reflects the different and broader profile of students entering higher education at these levels. The most striking finding of the report is the very positive correlation between Leaving Certificate performance and successful completion. In the institute of technology sector 12% of
students enter with more than 400 Leaving Certificate points compared to 73% of university and 91% of college students.

Irish National Employer Survey

14/2/2019

KEY FINDINGS

HE (higher education) and FET (further education/training) Graduate Profiles

A large majority of both HE and FET graduates that were recruited in the past 24 months were hired from inside Ireland.
About one-third of employers hiring HE graduates from within Ireland hired business and law graduates, with 20% hiring engineering graduates, 18% hiring computing graduates and 18% hiring humanities and arts graduates. In general, it is also notable that foreign owned firms, larger firms and manufacturing firms appear more likely than others to hire graduates from science, technology, mathematics and engineering (STEM) disciplines.

About one-third of employers hiring HE graduates from outside Ireland, on the other hand, also hired business and law graduates. However, recruitment of HE graduates from outside Ireland also appears to be slightly more skewed towards STEM disciplines, with nearly a quarter of relevant employers hiring computing graduates, 18% hiring science and mathematics graduates and 15% hiring engineering graduates

Meanwhile, 28% of employers hiring FET graduates from within Ireland hired business and law graduates, with 21% hiring services graduates, 20% hiring health and welfare graduates and 15% hiring engineering graduates.

A similar 28% of employers hiring FET graduates from outside Ireland also hired business and law graduates. Some 23% of employers hired engineering graduates, 19% hired services graduates, 18% hired health and welfare graduates, and 14% hired humanities and arts graduates.

Graduate Skills Needs

For HE graduates, the most frequently cited skills needs were computer literacy skills – incorporating IT, software, web and graphic design, and digital marketing skills – business acumen/management skills, engineering skills, and accounting and marketing skills. For FET graduates, the most frequently cited skills needs were computer literacy skills, apprentice skills, business and project management skills and marketing-related skills.

The Scholarship Programme is an opportunity for students to receive some financial assistance through third-level education and on to the CTA programme to begin a career as a Chartered Tax Adviser (CTA).  They will also be provided with a mentor from the Irish Tax Institute to support them through the Scholarship Programme.

If they aspire to a dynamic profession, one which offers top-level opportunities in business and industry at home or abroad, but require financial support to progress to third-level, then this Scholarship programme offers them an ideal opportunity to pursue a career in tax.

Who is eligible to apply?

Leaving Certificate students in the Republic of Ireland who are interested in a career in tax and feel they will achieve at least 420 points in the Leaving Certificate, but who require financial support to progress to third-level can apply.

How do students apply?

Students will be required to be nominated by a school guidance counsellor, who will be required to submit an expression of interest on their behalf by Friday, 8 March 2019.

The student will then have to complete an application form which should be submitted along with a profile as to why they think they should receive the Scholarship by Friday, 12 April 2019.

The Trinity Access Programme (TAP) offers an alternative route to Higher Education for students whose social, economic and educational experiences have so far prevented them from realising their full educational potential.

Liberties College has been running an Access Programme (TAP) for over ten years in partnership with Trinity College. The course mirrors the TAP Foundation Course for Young Adults (18-22) in TCD and allows participants the same opportunities to apply directly for places in the university. Successful students achieve a QQI Level 5 Award (5M3114) and may also apply for places on other Higher Education course through the CAO. Students study in Liberties College but participate in activities in Trinity College.

To support your work with TAP applicants, we are enclosing a copy of the TAP application form 2019-20 and the application Guidebook 2019-20.
